Meta Advertising Standards | Facebook advertising guidelines

About Meta Advertising Standards Updated [2023]

Facebook's policies apply to paid advertising through Meta's ad platform, including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and the Meta Audience Network. Stay tuned for updates to Facebook advertising guidelines.

Advertisers are required to follow Facebook's advertising policies, which are designed to help protect people from poor experiences and support meaningful connections between people and businesses. For example, Facebook doesn't want ads that use profanity, show excessive nudity or include misinformation.

Facebook's advertising policies often change leaving Facebook advertising agencies at a loss, when they are randomly shut down. This becomes a problem when entire lines of retail and commerce traffic are stopped. Ads are no longer live, money stops flowing in and ad agencies are left staring at their hands.

As the CEO of Infinacore discovered when working with me, Facebook's automations show no mercy shutting you down and you need to know what is triggering them to target you in order to keep your Facebook ads live. Want to know why your ads are shut down and how to stay compliant?

Facebook advertising guidelines apply to paid advertising through Meta's ad platform, including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and the Meta Audience Network. For a full list of Facebook's advertising policies, you can visit Meta's Advertising Standards.

A lot of the ad policies are enforced by machines - so the real ad policies aren't that transparent. This is because the hypothetical reasoning that the Facebook engineers have for how the automations are supposed to work.

That isn't the reality of your experience as an advertiser when ads are misflagged or flagged without explanation.

[How to Recover Facebook Ad Account]

In this blog I'll share updates to facebook advertising guidelines - with my own special sauce thrown in. I worked with the engineers that created these automations at Facebook and can add a bit more transparency to help you out.

Facebook Ad Policies Have Been Renamed to Meta Ad Standards

Meta has renamed their Facebook Advertising Policies to Meta Advertising Standards to make Facebook advertising guidelines “as useful, transparent and clear as possible.”

Which can be a double standard given the support offered to advertisers chatting in being less than stellar. But hey that's what I'm here to to help with - your local neighborhood Facebook ad policy specialist. (Check out: Top Reasons Why Facebook Disabled Ad Accounts).

Facebook Advertising Guideline Changes

Next up, I'll share more on new changes to Facebook's API you'll want to keep in mind when running ads. Here's a TLDR:

What's Changed: API reporting, Automated takedowns, Allow Lists, New Insights Dashboard & more

New IP Reporting API

Protecting intellectual property (IP) on social media is a higher priority with the new content creator monetization programs Facebook recently rolled out.

I personally worked at Facebook in the content creator monetization programs.

Just like there is an epidemic of imposter accounts on IG and Facebook - it's also common for other users to copy and share popular content. That's why Facebook keeps updating the Facebook advertising guidelines. Fake accounts are popping up like cray cray!!!

To fight this, Meta announced a new IP Reporting API that’s created to protect original content across Facebook and Instagram. It allows the copyright holders to report content that they believe violates their intellectual property rights.

Now, this has been an existing policy within Facebook's advertising policies for Facebook ads that post content that violates intellectual property rights. It's just being applied to the regular non-ad content now that Facebook | Meta has focused on monetizing content creators with large followings.

Check out Essential Facebook Ad Policies to Know [Ultimate Guide] here.

The new API is integrated with the Graph API that allows users to easily fill out report forms.

Meta / Facebook is also attempting to improve the Brand Rights Protection feature. That feature helps brands protect their content by identifying counterfeit products, copyright infringement, impersonation, and trademark violations.

So, in a way, this is automating copyright violation checks. It can search for content that meets any of the above criteria and report it with a request to have it removed. You can find the Brand Rights Protection feature in the Business Manager.

Additional Policies That May Apply to Your Ad's Advertising Guidelines

NewBrand Rights Protection features that rolling out soon include:

  • Automated takedowns for eligible brands: This allows brands with a strong reporting history to have reported content automatically be approved. Facebook will continue audits you to ensure this feature isn’t abused.
  • Allow lists: These let brands upload a list of accounts pre-approved to share their content.
  • Automated recommendations: This feature lets Meta automatically recommend commerce listings, Pages, accounts, and ads for brands to review. Facebook bases these recs on previous reports, reference images, and allow lists.
  • The ability to search and report: Groups, Pages, profiles, accounts, and posts on both Instagram and Facebook.
  • Increased search functionality: Now you can search by image on more types of content like posts, URLs, and IDs.
  • A new Insights dashboard: This dashboard shows the past 90 days of actions taken from the reports you’ve submitted in the Brands Right Protection feature .

My client Dr. Mark Carter of Aspire Medical Centers found out working with me, it was much easier to save time and money getting his funnel audited than leaving it up to chance and having Facebook shut him down again. After we worked together, he was back up and advertising again, helping his patients get healthy.

What We expect in 2023

Keep an eye out for more updates with Instagram Reels, Facebook Groups and Advantage+ Campaigns. Beginning in February 2023, advertisers will only be able to use age and location to reach teens. Facebook is removing gender as a targeting option - thats another update to the Facebook advertising guidelines.

Continued Emphasis on Reels

Reels are essential to Instagram, just like Facebook Stories have become. Instagram Reels have been a major source of traffic, revenue, and engagement. Last year Instagram revealed a lot of updates to IG Reels:

• Content scheduling
• Achievements feature
• Digital collectibles

Digital collectibles are like non-fungible tokens (NFTs) which are designed to help creators make money on the platform. I actually worked on this feature when I was a Project Manager at Facebook.

The new Achievements feature is aimed at acknowledging “the effort creators are putting into their Reels which is testing globally.”

By the same token in the content creator space, you can now get the Rising Creator Reward. Here's mine for the sci-fi novels I write:

Facebook ad policies guide

This feature helps creators get a bigger audience for their content. Facebook will recommend or highlight profiles with the Rising Creator Awards in the Newsfeed.

• Gifts for creators - similar to Twitter’s Tip Jar gifts allows users to directly tip their favorite content creators.
• Profile song feature - users on Instagram can add a song to their profiles
• Recreate reels with Reels Template
• AR closed captions for reels and videos
• Enhanced tags for creators
• End of IGTV app & In-Stream video ads
• Scheduled lives
• Remixed videos

It only follows that Instagram will continue to try to reverse engineer TikTok and Reels will continue to be a major focus for Facebook | Meta going into 2023. [More features released last year here].

More New Facebook Groups Features

Groups are vital to increase engagement on Facebook right now. In 2022, Facebook added moderator tools for Groups, and subscription-based groups have new tools to monetize their Facebook presence. I worked with creators at Facebook on these new tools.

Another change you'll notice is Groups are very visible in the Newsfeed. They even have their own separate Newsfeed: Facebook Groups Newsfeed.

So, definitely expect Facebook Groups to continue to have new updates, new tools and new collaborations with businesses in 2023. And with each update you'll want to make sure your ads are compliant (Common Facebook Ad Policy Violations [Explained])

A Bigger Push for Advantage+ Campaigns

Facebook's Advantage+ campaigns are new automation-heavy ad campaigns that harness Facebook’s advanced machine learning abilities to (ideally) get brands better results.

There are multiple types of Advantage+ campaigns, and Facebook has been actively working on advancing these offerings. Where Facebook takes this and develops Advantage+campaigns will be interesting to see this year. Just make sure your ads are compliant.

One of the biggest things to watch out for in 2023 are new changes to Facebook's ad policies. If you're wanting the latest updates and an accurate Facebook advertising guide make sure to continue to check back here. And read Meta's latest announcements in their Facebook newsroom.

Because if you don't stay up-to-date, and a new Facebook ad policy makes ads you are running no longer allowed, you could face a disabled ad account, disabled Business Manager or rejected Facebook ads.

Facebook | Meta doesn't take into consideration that your ads used to be compliant when you ran them until new ad policies made them prohibited. The automations will simply shut you down without explanation.
