A lot of people have been shut down without a second thought – this reddit post alone has many talking about getting banned without warning.

You may try to go to Facebook’s help pages, but come away frustrated because they don’t tell you how to get your Facebook ads live again. My article sheds some light on what to do if your ad account is disabled.

I say troubleshoot a restricted ad account because it really is like a tech support issue, rather than an advertising one. Because machines are the ones, not humans, doing the flagging.

The evil bots will send you a request to confirm your identity but there’s a fatal flaw in this request: half the time the identity form itself doesn’t work.

When I was working in ads at Facebook and tech, I edited some of these forms. I saw the backend of what you’re filling out to get back your disabled Facebook ad account. And you know what happened a lot?

The form was broken. When you are sending in your driver’s license or whatever, to confirm your identity and never hear back OR get a denial response – many times it isn’t your fault!

It’s because the form itself was broken and Facebook or Meta as Mark is calling it now, just rec’d a blank form without your driver’s license.

Then, when you are waiting to hear back, even if you filled the confirm identity form out the machines will send you this message: “Your access can’t be reinstated because too much time has passed since we restricted your account.”

So, Facebook ad support doesn’t know the form malfunctioned, they just get a partial form and respond like any giant corporation would, and assume you didn’t fill it out and ignore future appeals.

Or worse, if you just slammed down the keyboard and ran NEW ads without looking to see if they had the SAME flags as the ads that got you in Facebook jail, then Facebook will assume that you are trying to sneak around their ad policies intentionally, and hit you with ANOTHER flag called  Circumventing Systems.

To be honest, I would suggest that you don’t rely on an appeal to get your ad account back.

You may find that it is a lost cause. BUT, if you want the best chance of getting it back, there are a few steps I can recommend:

• Don’t wait longer than 48 hours to appeal
• Don’t use the Request Review button inside Business Manager
• First determine the EXACT reason you were shut down
• Chat in to Facebook Ad Support request a manual review
• Accept that you may need to another strategy – I can help with that.

Your first step should always be to stop active ads running with the same copy as the rejected ad, then audit your funnel for flags, and appeal using the strategy outlined in the appeal section of the FAQs

Typically, it’s a 1 to 10 ratio. For every single rejected ad that you get, you’ll want 10 Facebook ads that are approved. After a pattern of behavior is established by machine learning, from Meta’s automations, you may spiral rapidly into Facebook jail if your ratios aren’t correct. 3 consecutive ads getting rejected risks your ad account getting disabled. But, it also depends on how severe the ban is.

As far as removing a restriction on a Facebook ad account, if we’re talking about a disabled ad account, well, you can rehabilitate your funnel and then appeal, possibly getting it reactivated if you do this SMART (I have methods that work if you’re in the appeal window). But as far as removing a restriction from Facebook ads, see the previous FAQ answer: you need to get in a positive approval-cycle ratio.

Now, ask yourself, is it an election year? Have there been over 20,000 Meta employees laid off? Did you word your appeal using specific language Facebook ad support can and will respond better to? These are the factors in play. Typically, you get an answer within a week. If you have a more severe ban or are in the special ad categories, you may get an answer faster but it won’t be one you like. Severe bans end up as permanent restrictions and they deliver that ban hammer faster than other lighter Facebook ad policy restrictions.

Now, unblocking an ad account, may be possible if you get in fast enough with the right kind of messaging to Facebook ad support. While they are the gatekeepers, and don’t have any real power, they CAN talk to the right folks who, if you word your appeal right, can unblock your Facebook ad account. I’ve said this time and time again, you want to prescreen your ads for compliance before focusing on conversions. It’s better to try to prevent yourself from being shut down than try to pick up the pieces afterwards.

Social media marketing agencies like this one, write articles that acknowledge how Facebook’s machines don’t discern idiomatic phrases that well – so be careful how you word ad copy.

I mean, you could go to Social Media Marketing World, Go High Level events, or the Content Marketing World summit in San Diego, California, and never learn a thimble-sized amount about how to stop losing money from Facebook bans.

They don’t really have a solution to this problem but I do.
